10. What is Demand Response?

Demand response (DR) encourages customers to reduce or shift their energy use when demand on the power grid is high. As EV adoptions grow across the country, demand for energy increases and can cause strain on the power grid. DR decreases the use of less efficient and more expensive power sources and reduces the need for power grid upgrades to meet increasing energy demand. That’s good for the environment and helps keep energy costs low.

The SmartCharge: EV Charging Assistant Rewards program allows APS to make brief adjustments to your charging schedule to help manage impacts on the power grid during periods of high energy demand. You will be notified before a conservation event via your charger's app. You can opt out of an event at any time by adjusting your charger back to its normal settings.

11. What is daily load shaping?

Daily load shaping automatically optimizes charging schedules within drivers' preferences to reduce energy bills, protect power grid assets and more. If you set a desired departure time, the charging software will ensure that charging is complete by that time.

12. How will my EV or EV charger be adjusted?

  • Daily, your EV charging will automatically shift outside of no-peak hours into the preferred charging period from 11p.m. until 7 a.m. MST or during solar hours from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. MST. You can opt out of conservation events at any time from your charger manufacturer's app.
  • At the start of a conservation event, if your vehicle is plugged in, your charger will automatically adjust to delay the vehicle charging. The adjustment will typically last no more than two hours and will not occur on holidays. Once the conservation event is over, your charger will return to normal operation. You can opt out of a conversation event at any time through your charger manufacturer's mobile app.
  • Access to vehicle information, vehicle location and vehicle charging management allows APS to understand your vehicle's routines to best optimize your charging needs. This data also ensures APS does not interrupt public charging sessions.

13. Will participating in SmartCharge: EV Charging Assistant Rewards negatively impact my vehicle receiving a full charge?

Conservation events will only temporarily delay the vehicle charging for up to a few hours. If you set a desired departure time, the charging software will ensure that charging is complete by that time.

14. Who can I contact if I have additional questions about the SmartCharge: EV Charging Assistant Rewards program?

Send an email to apssmartcharge@energyhub.com for more information or to request to end your participation in the program.

15. Will I be notified of conservation events?

Depending on the EV charger manufacturer, notifications may appear before or at the start of the event in your web or mobile application:

ChargePoint

  • ChargePoint provides notifications via email, text message and in-app 24 hours before the conservation event occurs or immediately if the event is scheduled within 24 hours.
  • For example:
    • If APS schedules a conservation event one week out on a Wednesday between 5 and 9 p.m., a participating customer will receive a notification on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
    • If APS schedules a conservation event for the same day, participating customers will receive an immediate alert.
    • For more details on setting up ChargePoint notifications, please click here

Emporia

  • Currently, Emporia does not provide notifications prior to a conservation event.

EvoCharge

  • Customers will receive a push notification from the EvoCharge app when a conservation event is scheduled and when the conservation event begins.

Tesla

  • Currently, Tesla does not provide notifications prior to a conservation event.

Wallbox

  • Wallbox provides notifications via email before the start of a conservation event. The email will include a link to opt out if needed. You will receive an email to the email address that you used to sign up for the program.

16. What should I expect during a conservation event?

ChargePoint

  • Participating customers can tap the in-app conservation event notification to turn off participation once the event has started. The customer will remain in the event if no action is taken.
  • After receiving the notification, the user can also go to the “Home Charger” in-app screen to opt out of the conservation event.
  • The conservation event is always present in the in-app experience.
  • When the conservation event is in progress, the charger’s charging status either displays as paused, stopped or at a lower charge rate depending on APS's goals for the event.
  • Customers can tap on the “Utility Event” option in-app and turn participation off to continue charging as usual.
  • The conservation event will disappear from the in-app screen automatically once it ends. When the charger has a set charging schedule and there is an event during the scheduled charging time, the app screen will update to display when the charger will begin recharging on its set schedule based on the event duration.
  • If the user turns the participation toggle off, the charging status updates from the scheduled time it would resume charging to “Not participating.”

Emporia

  • When a conservation event is occurring or scheduled, customers will be able to see “Your Utility may control this device” or “Your Utility is controlling this device” and the event time in their apps charging screen. Customers can opt out of a conservation event and start charging immediately by making any change to their charge rate in the app.

EvoCharge

  • When a conservation event is occurring or scheduled, customers will see “Current Event” or “Upcoming Event” in their home screen. Customers can opt out of a conservation event and start charging immediately by toggling to “opt out” or by “sliding to start charging”.

Tesla

  • When a conservation event is occurring, customers will see an update to their charge status in their Tesla app, the charger interface and the ChargingRewards App.

Wallbox

  • When a conservation event is occurring, customers will see that their charging may be paused. To confirm that this is due to a conservation event, please check to see if you received an event notification email.
